The Festivals of Washington DC – Part 2
The next foray into the world of festivals in Washington DC leads us to a barbecue, let’s us participate in a sporting event and visit a jazz festival. Washington is one of the best places in the whole of America to host events and festivals, not just because it is the capital city of the U.S but because it has so much going on and the locals like to enjoy themselves.
The DC Jazz Festival
The DC Jazz festival is held in venues spread out all over the city and brings together a host of top musicians both local and national. The venues include the Howard Theater, The Wharf and the prestigious Kennedy Center, as well as, of course, many jazz bars and clubs dotted around DC. Most of the festival is completely free so Jazz fans can enjoy their favorite music at no charge.
The MLB All Star Week
Not so much a festival but a complete sporting baseball extravaganza. 2018 heralds an extra special sporting occasion as Washington will host the first MLB All-Star Match since 1969. There will be a complete week of sporting activities, including a marvelous FanFest at the Walter E Washington Convention Center.
The AFI Docs is an international film festival hosted by the American Film Institute. Its main theme is documentaries with a wide range of topics from health, politics, education, culture and sports. The festival also celebrates the power of storytelling in film.
Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle
Polish your tongs, there is a culinary battle taking place at the Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle coming to DC in June. Pitmaster compete against the very best all over the fifty states each demonstrating the art of barbecue. The giant food festival takes place down Pennsylvania Avenue which is closed especially for the occasion. It is one big street party with rib roasters and sauce bosses displaying their best culinary techniques to produce the most tasty and delectable meat. There are also cooking demonstrations and even free tastings for the whole family in this feast of fun.
Smithsonian Folklife Festivals
The first thing about the Smithsonian Folklife Festival is that it is completely free. The venue for this great event is the auspicious and grand National Mall with its great outdoor spaces adding to the atmosphere. What is on show at this festival is American culture, and there are some great live bands also. Festival goers can browse through the expansive marketplace that has a plethora of books, pottery, toys, textiles, sculptures, pottery, clothing all made by American hands.
Comcast Xfinity Outdoor Film Festivals
Ever since the all-American movie drive in’s, Americans have an affinity with watching films outdoors on big screens. And summer is not summer in Washington without watching your favorite movies in the open air at Strathmore Campus. The three-day festival starts at dusk every evening and moviegoers can lay down on the lawn and enjoy the on-site food, families are particularly welcome as the whole event is for the benefit of the National Institute of Health Children’s Charities.
